Japan

Social protection in Japan is based on a distinctive system. It is essential to understand it fully before you leave, so as to make the right decisions about your health cover.

Cost of a medical consultation in Japan

Are you an expat in Japan who needs to see a doctor?
A consultation costs roughly ¥5,000 to ¥10,000 (between €38 and €76).

HEALTHCARE IN JAPAN

The healthcare system in Japan

In Japan, every resident is required to join a health insurance scheme according to their situation. There are three types of scheme:

– The employees’ health insurance scheme.
– The public health insurance scheme, which applies to anyone who is not an employee and is under 75.
– The public health insurance scheme for people over 75.

Any approved medical facility is required to treat an insured person, whatever their scheme. The facility then bills the insurer, and the patient pays the remaining share — around 30%.

Health insurance does not cover cosmetic surgery, health check-ups, vaccinations, abortion or certain high-technology procedures. The treatment of injuries sustained in an accident is covered in full by the party at fault.

Japanese social security does not insure foreigners unless they register as foreign residents. You therefore need to arrange dedicated expat insurance before you leave. What is more, first-euro private health insurance lets you choose your doctor — not all of them speak English within the Japanese healthcare system.
