The healthcare system in Hong Kong
Once you hold a Hong Kong identity card, the hospital charge remains affordable. This card is compulsory for stays of more than 180 days and must be applied for in person at the immigration centres.
The flip side of this system is that public hospitals are overstretched and waiting times for a consultation are very long. Semi-private and private facilities offer much shorter waits, but at a far higher cost. For this reason, expats prefer to take out first-euro private Hong Kong insurance, so as to be properly covered for the care they can then access quickly.
