The healthcare system in Switzerland
The Swiss healthcare system is built on compulsory basic insurance, which must be taken out within three months of arriving in the country. It can be topped up with supplementary cover. Note that international civil servants and permanent missions are exempt from this requirement.
Unlike many European countries, the Swiss scheme is private and governed by the LAMal (the Health Insurance Act).
There are several funds, whose prices vary according to the insured person’s canton of residence, their sex and the level of deductible chosen.
The deductible ranges from CHF 0 to CHF 2,500.
